She looked out of the open window. Her mother in law was already up. She was standing beside the mango tree, most probably brushing her teeth.
The moonlight was softly scattered on the dilapidated walls of old buildings and palanquin stands. The birds were twittering but half asleep.
Mom was up that meant she too will have to get up, even though her mother in law vehemently ordered her again and again to not get up with her but she had to. It was the custom for the daughter in law to get up before the in-laws, even if they ordered otherwise.
She turned her face and her sleep vanished in that instant. Her mother in law was sound asleep in the bed.
She turned back in that very second.
There was no one under the tree.
There was no chance she could run away because there was nowhere to run to, hide in.
